Preliminary Tasks

Ellie's Preliminary Task

Tarryn's Preliminary Task

WWW:
  • We used a variety of angles and shot types (Mid shot, long shot, close up, over the shoulder shot etc).
  • Used the 180 degree rule.
  • Used a variety of lighting.
  • Used music.
  • Use of continuity editing. (Door opening and closing at the end and when the hands slam down on the table.)

EBI:
  • If the cuts were fluent and flowed.
  • No background noise.
  • If the camera was steady when it needed to be.
  • If there was some sound effects.

Overall, I think that me and my group did reasonably well in the time we were given. Our group did have less time though because of some difficulties with the camera we were using. Which meant that we had to re shoot everything again and we had less time to edit. I think if we had been given a bit more time to complete this task it would have been a lot better overall.

Chloe's Preliminary Task

Fine Cutting Process
During editing our video, we encountered various different problems putting our piece together. One of which was using the necessary parts so the clip would make sense. We decided to add a piece of text to the first slide we added in 'Preliminary Excersise' as we thought this is the purpose of the film. I found it  quite tricky to actually put the pieces together, as where as the others found that part easy. I am struggling a little at the moment using 'i movie' I now know thats one of my weaknesses' and I will have to spend my own time coming to grips with it. After this we experimented using slow motion on our 'running scene' however when we all watched it through we all decided it looked rather too cheesy and we wouldn't include that in. After this we decided to add a short music clip to create more of an atmosphere in one particular clip, the last clip of the 'villian' closeup. We thought using a closeup and having spooky music would help to create more intensity in the clip, and perhaps draw the audience in more. We made sure everything linked together so it had continuity throughout.

Shots
In picking our shots we made sure that we used some of the most well known shot techniques including:  Medium Close Ups, Low Angle, Panning, Over The Shoulder and a few others. We made sure we created several different types of the same shot just in case we needed a wider choice of shot options. Unfortunately as a group we forgot to add any establishing shots, which meant our audience would find it challenging to work out the surroundings of the filming. Another EBI would be that we could of used a POV shot when I was looking down out the window at Kiren, as perhaps that would of shown the audience the intensity of the shot.

Lighting

The lighting we used was all natural throughout. The first shot was of me on the window ledge which meant we could use the lighting from outside (exterior). The shot of Me and Kiren going up and down the stairs had high lighting as we had the light from the gaps between the steps, Which helped us to create a spooky atmosphere. we used low key lighting for when Kiren was walking up the stairs as she was the antagonist of the piece  therefore the lighting gave her character a darker feel. We didn't encounter any problems using the natural lighting from outside. However, We had to re-do the shot of the fork being dug into the ground and unfortunately the new lighting was much brighter and stood out more from the lighting in the rest of the film. We had to use the editing facilities on I Movie to try an correct this obvious error.

Sound

Using sounds was really an interesting part of the process as it allowed us to create moods for different shots. On I Movie we found a clip called 'Suspense Drone' and we used this to create mystery and horror to the  slow motion clip of Kiren's eyes at the end. We made sure that we faded the clip out towards the end, as we didn't want to have a sharp, sudden ending as this would be confusing for the audience. With some of the clips we detached the audio and moved it and faded it before the clip started so the cutting didn't seem to sharp and sudden. We decided for some of the scenes the sound clips on 'I Movie' wasn't appropriate for the moods of the scenes. So we decided to use garage band to cover up some of the background sounds that we accidently picked up whilst filming. We used sounds mainly to create suspense in the film. We also used silence to emphasise the scene on the stairs, to spook the audience out!
